Japanese Firsts

Japan is a very different place. The culture and the people work very differently from Western culture. So there are many things that worth rating as “firsts”, and these are a few of them here.

First time buying an anime related item in Japan. It was a lucky raffle, I bought a ‘ticket’ for 800yen and then randomly picked a prize from a box. This is Kallen from Code Geass. Willing to sell anime items w/ postage from Japan ;) lol

First time having a toilet CLEAN YOUR BUM in Japan.
It is really good. The picture below was an exercise in…well it was a learning experience. I tried to trick the toilet into thinking I was sitting down on it using my knees to take the photo (cos it has a sensor to prevent accidental usage). However, I failed to realise the strength of the jet, and without a bum to clean/stop the water, it jetted over 4metres, and meant a lot of cleaning the floor for me.

First time using toilet water to clean your hands. It is a really smart idea, and works wonders for saving water. They should really do that to toilets at home, no real reason not to.

First time going to sushi train in Japan.
(soooo yummy and too busy eating to take photos keke.) The food was really good, really fresh, a lot wider range, and really tasty.

First time using a squat toilet in Japan.
(urghz, see toilet post below) These toilets don’t clean your bum though. Enough about toilets. Really.

Using a Japanese bath EVERYDAY. Soooooooo damn good. I’m sorry for the language, but it really is. It’s a lot warmer than I’m used to back home, at around 42degrees. The wood is also apparently some special wood and good for the skin. The bath is definitely good for the soul ;)

The bath doesn’t look like much, but the design means you can sit down properly in it and be totally covered. There are also wooden planks to put over the bath to keep the warmth in.

First time doing Karaoke in Japan. So much better, more advanced, easier to use, and they have special menus where you can “all-you-can-drink” softdrinks and/or alcohol and they have some funky food to eat too. Fun fun fun.

There’s sooooooo much more that I will and want to do in Japan, a lot of it in Tokyo, which I’ll be going to in a few weeks, so I’ll be able to tick off a lot more things then. Tanoshimi-des!!

I also really need to remember to take photos when I’m enjoying myself. hehe. Off to Fukoyama or somewhere now =)

Lataz~

Hi Leginag, I saw your relaunch note over at the Cove forum and thought I’d drop by and have a look – I wasn’t disappointed. Your photos bring out the spirit and culture of Japan. Now I’ve got itchy feet – I need to travel!

I gather that Japan is expensive? That said a friend says that its actually quite cheap (thought his wife is Japanese so he has an advantage). Is there anything you’d do differently if you could redo your trip?

By the way, I love the wooden bath. We’re about to renovate the bathroom and your photo (and rave review!) has got me thinking about building a japanese bath. Is it just a simple rectangular box, are is it angled? How thick are the sides? How do the corners join – do they just butt together or are they morticed? oh, and does it have caulking between the pieces of timber?

Anyway, hope you continue having fun.

Regards, Stephen
