Christmas 2011 in Japan

2011 saw me spending my fourth Christmas in Japan. And it was a very special Christmas indeed. Although where I was wasn’t blanketed in snow, it still did snow, so I’m calling it a White Christmas

My previous blog post showcased the amazing One Piece exhibition. But that was not all that we did this Christmas weekend to make it awesome.

Here is the amazing Christmas cake we had. Super cute!

Our Christmas lunch was just amazing.

Lobster!!! They showed us a live video with the chef who had fresh lobsters that he was using to prepare the dishes. Yummy!

The weather was beautiful, rounding off a beautiful day.

Here’s the chef preparing the roast beef.

And here’s the roast beef – with christmas decorations. It was really nice!!

Cake Buffet!!!

Yummy cakes. Did I mention a buffet. Enough said.

The Christmas dinner we had was also super yummy!

We spent a lot of time with our grandmother as she is in hospital after a stroke. But she is getting better, so that is good.

This is me wearing my Chopper hat. Chopper is a One Piece Reindeer character.

School Lunches – Nov Update

Here are some of the school lunches (kyuushoku) that I’ve had over the past week or so.

I kinda wish we had these lunches back down under.

Nice variety each time.

Plus, since everyone eats the same, there’s no competition.

You read some horror stories on the JET forums, but really, I’ve never had a problem with kyuushoku.

Fresh Lunch

This fresh lunch is what we’re eating right now!

Fresh baked oysters in their shell, straight from the sea not 500m away.
Fried Oysters - also fresh, which I cooked. =)
Kaki (Persimmon) salad - straight from our garden
Fresh tomatoes from a local garden.
Tofu and Vegetable stew – using locally grown vegetables.

Yum!!

School Lunch 2 & 3

Taught at 2 elementary schools the last two days as well, so I got kyuushoku. =)

The dango on the left was pretty special, and yum.

And we don’t always have rice. The tomatoes were grown at the school.

A super quick blog. Will blog more about my schools this weekend.

First school lunch – kyuushoku

Today was my first elementary school, and I get to eat the school lunch with the students! I’ll eat lunch with a different class each time, except for the schools where I eat with everyone.
Fish, vegetables, vegetable soup, rice and milk. The menu changes each day and depending on the school.

It’s amazing to see the students all serve the food, then clean it up. And it’s so tasty!

Okonomiyaki Horikawa

My favourite okonomiyaki restaurant, Horikawa, now has its own anime poster.

I’m not sure if it means that there will be/is an episode where it features, but I’ve just enjoyed another awesome okonomiyaki dinner at Horikawa.

And yes, their okonomiyaki really is that good.

So you probably know that I love Haazen-Dazs ice cream, which is hard to get back down under, but is available in abundant supply in Japan.

But imagine my shock when I saw for the first time today: Godiva Ice Cream.

I like fish

Fish in Japan is tasty and plentiful. Let’s take a look at what I’ve eaten in the last day.

In a hurry after the end of my language camp, we dropped by the 105yen sushi store. But the fish there doesn’t compare to what followed…

Dinner with the family, sashimi *grins*

There were several other dishes of fish, but impressively it was finished off with this. It was quite a surprise to have this placed in front of me. Two eyes staring up at you.

The next day for lunch… Sushi Train!

You can actually taste the difference between the fish quality, compared to the day before.

My advice if going to the 105yen sushi train is to get the sushi with only one piece on the plate. It tastes so much better than the ones with two on a plate.

And if you’re visiting Japan, definitely go to a proper (tiered plate pricing) sushi train. Get recommendations from locals as to which restaurant is best, but you’ll be doing yourself and your taste buds a favour.

At home, for dinner, I got a whole fish to myself.
